AP seeks to buy more power thru exchanges

The Andhra Pradesh Government is trying to procure power through arrangements from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and other sources. It is also negotiating with power exchanges for supply of power for the first week of October.

According to the current power supply situation, the demand is estimated to be about 267-270 million units per day and the Discoms are able to meet the requirement of about 234 MUs through all its resources. The demand has shot up in the past few days due to increasing demand from farm sector, who are operating pumpsets for the kharif crop requirements.

Meanwhile, political activity is gathering pace again, with 32 of the MLAs of the Telugu Desam Party from the Telangana region submitting their resignations to the Legislative Assembly Speaker's office today. There are also discussions between the State Congress (I) leaders and party functionaries in New Delhi dealing with Andhra affairs on the issue.

The ongoing strike for separate statehood through ‘Sakala Janula Samme' over the past 16 days has resulted in disruption of transport, closure of educational institutions, strike by colliers and non-cooperation of State Government staff in Telangana region.

Earlier, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, directed the Director-General of Police to ensure that law and order is maintained and violence prevented. According to a statement, he instructed the police to provide protection to properties and ensure safety of the citizens.
